Chalk Paint, Dark Wax and Hemp Oil Table Makeover

Today, I'm making over a coffee table/storage bench using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Miss Mustard Seed hemp oil.  I often mix brands and finishes on the same piece of furniture since there really is no single brand that is the "best" in every situation.

Since I'm not in the business of selling a particular brand or product, I have the luxury of using all types of products and selecting those which perform best for the finish that I'm trying to achieve. In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing a bunch of furniture makeovers using a variety of products as I'm finally clearing out and finishing up items that have been hanging around or which will be moving on to new homes as they won't have a space in the farmhouse when the renovation is complete.

This piece was in pretty good shape when I purchased it. It's a solid pine piece USA made in Chicago, IL by a local furniture company. The drawers have dove tail construction and the ends have a great little square peg detail. It just needed a little definition to set off the great advertising on the end panels and a refinish on the pine to remove the dull gray color that the varnish had taken on over the years.

I chose Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Graphite with dark wax for the main body and the knobs because I didn't want to strip it. I also felt that the soft sheen of a dark wax finish was appropriate for this piece because it was going to be in a family room or other location where it would not be exposed to water.

I removed the finish from the drawer fronts using Citrasolv and steel wool. I finished the drawer fronts with Miss Mustard Seed hemp oil which lends a richness to the wood without making it shiny.

I like the contrast between the soft sheen of the wax and the natural tones in the wood and I love the display drawer in the top and great storage in the deep drawer below.  The drawers pull out from both sides for ease of access to things like blankets and games.

Don't be afraid to use different products by different brands on a single piece. Choose the right product for the finish that you want to achieve and go for it! The results can be amazing and if you don't like them...just paint over them.

Combining two different finishes and product manufacturers is easy! On this table makeover, I used  Annie Sloan Chalk Paint with dark wax and Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil on natural pine.  What do you think? Do you like mixing products and finishes on a single piece? As always, I love your comments. Don't forget, I've been painting and refinishing furniture for over 35 years and I'm always available to answer a question or give advice in helping you choose the best products for your project.
