When I began work on the "patio makeover" for the space beneath my pergola, I immediately turned to my Exterior design and decor board to see what I had pinned back in February when it felt as if summer would never arrive. It was the pin above that I was looking for. It originally came from the Pottery Barn Spring Catalog.
Today, I hung the last lantern and I'm looking forward to sitting outdoors by candle light tonight, after dinner.
Now if I could only find a way to "knock off" that view......

Yours is much better than Pottery Barn. I love the pulley idea. I've been seeing colored recycled glass containers like these http://www.westelm.com/products/recycled-glass-lantern-a787/?pkey=coutdoor-lighting-candles
ReplyDeleteon line lately. I would like to duplicate without the cost.
Hi Kathi! I looked at the West Elm site and I've got to admit, I love their jars but for me, it's more about the COLORS than the shapes. Go over to my Pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/Serendipitydsn/tips-and-tricks/ I put two pins on there for you about how to make colored glass using Modge podge and food coloring. Save your cool glass jars (jelly, pasta sauce, salsa. Ask your neighbors too. You can make them yourself for virtually FREE! :)
DeleteThank you! You're right it is all about the color!
DeleteThank you! You are right it is all about the color!
DeleteYou did a fantastic job too! Every bit as pretty as the original from PB.

This is breath-taking! You really did a beautiful job on this -- can you actually reach all of them to get them lighted? Do you use the pulleys or are they just decorative? Sorry for so many questions -- love this!
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren! I've set it up so that I can use all of the pulleys if I want to. As for lighting the lanterns, all but one of them is on a hook (able to be removed and rehung for lighting). This also enables me to remove them when it gets windy or we have heavy rain.
DeleteCame over from Nifty Thrifty to see your lanterns - agree with the above, yours are better. I love the idea of using the pulleys to light them.. Be warned: I just learned on another post that the Mod Podge colored glass will fade in the sun:>(
