Today, I finally got a couple of bins of 4th of July decorations out of the attic and decided to put a few vintage red white and blue things on the kitchen table. I really didn't plan on doing too much decorating this year.

To be completely honest, the main reason I got them out is because we're in the process of emptying the attic in preparation for cutting the roof off of our house in the next few weeks and I figured that as as long as I had them handy, I'd do just a little decorating.....and I mean a little.

I've always loved the 4th of July.  When my sons were younger, it was a huge holiday in our home.  From the time that they were born, we hosted friends for "red white and blue breakfast" followed by a trip to the local parade then afternoon grilling, water balloons and home made vanilla ice cream. There were a couple of years when I think that the group grew to near 100 people!

This year, things are going to be more quiet. I've had a couple of  friends ask if we are having our annual party this year and, sadly, we're not. We'll still be celebrating and, of course, making ice cream but I've decided to spare our friends the joy of trying to navigate the mud and gravel that used to be our patio or trying to find a place to sit with a plate of baked beans on their laps amid the boxes.

I'm hopeful and excited at the prospect of having a finished home (and a working kitchen) by the time that 4th of July rolls around next year.

This year, I'll be moving boxes from the attic to the basement....and singing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" at the top of my lungs while I do it...Yes, I most assuredly will! Why not? The neighbors are already wondering what's going on over here! New people moved into the house two doors from me and asked our friends across the street if we are "preparing to do some work on the place".

That makes me giggle just a little because I suspected that there were at least a few people who were curious about the status of our home....especially since we've been without landscaping and there have been jackhammers in the yard taking out concrete for a week but I'm still decorating for the holidays (more on that topic on Monday).

Now that the kitchen table is decked out in vintage red white and blue 4th of July decor, maybe I'll put a few things outside...and maybe on the dining room table...heck, there's still time, right!?

What about you? Do you celebrate the 4th of July? If you do, I'd love to hear about it.
