I've always loved Christmas stockings. Especially when they're home made...and easy! Don't let these photos fool you. These stockings are super simple to make and the pattern is really easy to adapt.
Any heavy weight fabric (like drop cloth, or canvas) will work for these stockings. I chose red and white cotton twill fabric because they're a gift to my sister and they match the Pottery Barn Inspired Christmas Countdown Pillow that I made for her last week.
The fabric for this project was purchased at JoAnn but I've also seen it at Hobby Lobby.
Materials (for two stockings):
1 yard Red and white striped cotton canvas
1/2 yard White cotton canvas
1/2 yard red cotton twill tape (or cord for hanger)
1 package Large red rick rack (optional)
1 package Red maxi piping (optional)
1 1/4 yard red pom-pom trim (optional)
Pattern at the end of this post printed and taped together
Scissors, pins, thread, ruler, sewing marker (disappearing ink found in the sewing section of Hobby Lobby)
NOTE: Ignore the large piece of red wool felt in the photo above....I thought that I was going to use it for part of the cuff but decided not to. See what I mean?! This pattern is flexible!
Directions:
Fold the striped fabric with right sides together. Pin pattern to fabric. Cut two stockings (4 pieces).
Using white fabric, measure and cut two pieces 12 inches by 13 and a halfinches. Fold in half lengthwise with Right side out (6 inches by 13 and a half inches). This is will be the cuff for the stocking.
Pin the piping to the right side of one half of the stocking matching the raw edges and baste into place. (This step is optional if you are not using piping.) After basting, place the remaining piece of the stocking on top with right sides together, matching raw edges. Sew through all layers along piping (or use 1/2 inch seam allowance). I finish my seams by using a zig zag stitch along the edge. This helps to prevent fraying and reinforces the seam.
For the cuff, measure 1 1/2 inches from the folded edge and draw a line using disappearing ink. Center rick rack along this line and stitch (or glue using fabric glue) into place.
Place pom pom trim under the folded edge and stitch (or glue) into place. Fold the cuff in half with the trim to the inside. Stitch along the short edge using 1/2 inch seam allowance and zig zag the edge, if desired.
Cut a 5 inch piece of cotton tape to form the loop which will be used to hang the stocking. Place the stocking body inside of the sewn cuff. The right side of the cuff will face the wrong side of the stocking. Align the hanging loop with the top edge of the stocking body as shown above.
Slide the cuff up to the top of the stocking and match the raw edges of the cuff with the raw edges of the stocking. Stitch into place.
Turn the stocking right side out, fold the cuff down, and pull the hanging loop up. Stencil an initial in black fabric paint or permanent marker...or write out the entire name...it's up to you!
That's all there is to it. When you're finished making these cuffed Christmas stockings, hang them on your mantel. Or, if you're like me and you don't have a mantel, hang them on the cabinet in your kitchen.
